JULIAN FLEISHER
BIO
A resident of New York for over 20 years, Julian is a native of Baltimore and a graduate of Yale University. As a composer and songwriter, his work has appeared in movies, on television and in the theater. On Broadway, he composed the music for The Performers at the Longacre Theater and Off-Broadway, he composed the score for John Cariani’s play Almost, Maine, which is officially the most produced play in America … and in many foreign countries as well. He has composed music for productions at The Mark Taper Forum, Connecticut Rep and The Portland Stage. Julian can be seen singing his own songs in such films as Dogtown and The Man From Elysian Fields and this fall, Chinese superstar Chi Ling Lin will be seen singing Me and The Moon, a song Julian wrote expressly for her in the new film Beijing / New York.
As a performer, Julian has starred in February House by Gabriel Kahane and Seth Bockley at The Long Wharf and The Public Theater, and in Coraline by Stephen Merritt and David Greenspan at The Lucille Lortel, produced by MCC. As a concert artist, he fronts his own 10-piece Rather Big Band with whom he has performed worldwide with such guests as Jennifer Holiday, Molly Ringwald, The New Standards, Tonya Pinkins, Martha Plimpton, Justin V. Bond, Nellie McMcKay, Kenny Mellman, Mo Rocca and Thomas Bartlett to name a few. He recently released a new CD of music, Finally, on Modern Records about which iTunes said “It’s as if Fleisher can get away with anything." Julian is a member of Elevator Repair Service and he serves on the board of The Musical Theater Factory.
The son of legendary concert pianist Leon Fleisher, Julian does not touch the keyboard but he has produced recordings for himself, Molly Pope, Kiki & Herb, Isabel Rose and Ana Gasteyer, among others.
As an author, Julian has published over a dozen books on subjects as diverse as grammar and vocabulary (The Smart Series for The Princeton Review and Random House) and drag (The Drag Queens of New York, An Illustrated Field Guide for Riverhead/Penguin)
Julian recently hosted The Naked American Songbook, a nationally syndicated music and talk show from WNYC and WQXR, as well as 44 Charlton, a monthly, New York-centric variety show from The Greene Space, WNYC’s street-level, live performance venue.
He is the recipient of the Peter S. Reed Award, a long-term residency at the Lark Play Development Center and, along with his writing partner, Kirsten Guenther, he has been in residence at The Orchard Project and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund in Tarrytown, NY.
